Remixing pain and the Terminator

Posted in art and design, neato, things i like, videos with tags , , , , , , , on February 8, 2010 by absurddelight

Two very talented media makers have new(ish) audio collage projects out. Both amazed us in concept and execution. And both reminded us of the potential within a sonic sliver of time.

First, here’s  “Skynet Symphonic” by Pogo.

It’s way more than just a movie mash-up. All the sounds are slices of the soundtrack from the film.

“Each section is composed entirely of sounds from a major scene in the film. For example, the Terminator pounding on the fire escape door is used as a kick drum. Bones breaking play the role of a snare. Electrical disturbance acts as a crash cymbal.” – Pogo’s You Tube channel.

Makes you want to train your ears a little more precisely right?

Well another project inadvertently reveals how this kind of remixing works. Ze Frank’s Pain Pack is a disarmingly ingenious idea. Ze Frank asked people to leave a voice mail message describing their emotional pain. Then he sent those voice mails to DJs who broke the cathartic voices into beats and sounds to re-mix.

One DJ wrote:

“I didn’t expect it to be as emotionally exhausting as it was. I felt a responsibility to do each person’s pain justice by making something crazy cool out of it…”

Listen to some of the messages, see the full process (which is half the fun of Ze Frank’s collaborative projects) and best of all, in light of the Terminator symphony up top, hear the 138 sounds/samples the DJs made and the 15 songs from those samples. Worth a click so here’s the link again.

Things we like: Selleck Waterfall Sandwich

We like this.

No idea on the origin of the site, but I presume there is some bored genius under-utlized in or under-employed behind this gift to the minions toiling in cubicle tedium.

And, lest you think that’s a one off, there are many more sandwich/Selleck varieties. Some even have animation. And a theme song.

UPDATE: Some site in the UK we’ve never heard of before has started their own rival site: Ian Mcshane bagpipes in space

Idiotarod 2010 – Get racing!

Posted in funny, things to do, videos with tags , , , , on January 29, 2010 by absurddelight

If you don’t know what the yearly Idiotaraod is, then the name should give you a hint. And what that doesn’t explain this video will:

OK, that explains very little except that this race involves shopping carts, costumes and dodge ball.

Here are some of the rules (selected for their explanatory power or humor):

Each team consists of five racers and one shopping cart.

Any team wearing spandex is disqualified.

While the cart is moving during the race, four racers must be forward of the back wheels of the cart (the “sled dog”position) and one racer must be behind the cart (the “musher” position).

The Committee has sole discretion over all points awarded or deducted, prizes awarded, which prizes are being awarded, race rules, all laws of physics, what time it is, and what happened in the past, all of which are subject to change without notice.

Actual full rules here.

Mind you, those are from a website that pretends to tell you the route and suggests that:

You figure it out. Or maybe Google will help you. Click on “Get Directions” and select “By Shopping Cart”.

America’s First Legal Gigolo

Posted in business, funny, news and media with tags , , , , , on January 24, 2010 by absurddelight

Via Details

Details Magazine broke some news last week. They had an “exclusive interview” that sparked coverage around the country of a little ranch in Nevada. That salacious scoop was picked up by the AP and spread through venerable CBS, MSNBC, and even staid NPR inciting gleeful web editors all around to chuckle and hit publish on headlines including the word “Prostidude.”  Originality reigns, but that’s not the point here.

The man of the hour goes by “Markus” and he’s using his 15 minutes of fame/ridicule to preach an empowerment gospel, part of a long venerable line of other civil rights heroes.

He is a man is proclaiming his rights for all to hear:

“It’s just the same as when Rosa Parks decided to sit at the front instead of the back. She was proclaiming her rights as a disadvantaged, African-American older woman. And I’m doing the same.”

And promoting empowerment:

“A surrogate lover will love that woman for a whole hour, or however much we charge here, and she’ll leave feeling much more empowered and much more confident in herself.”

Noble work indeed. And if you wonder how one comes to find stable pay for such saintly acts: Read more »

The Best Avocado Commercial Ever

Posted in business, funny, videos with tags , , , on December 19, 2009 by absurddelight

It’s an oldie but a goodie. Who doesn’t like a surrealist avocado commercial with a bonus shot of a pretty girl in a bikini.

@absurddelight has inside information that this video won first prize in an ad contest, raking in a whopping $2,500 in cold hard check. Not bad eh?

Here are a couple of the avocado entries that lost out: animated business avocados here, falling out of trees. Sadly, the full archive has been lost to the march of time.

Funny Sign – 99 Cent Store

Sometimes signs lie to us. Sometimes they confuse us.

Sometimes they delight us with the effort that went into their permanent broadcast of meaninglessness.

For the record:  There were many items for more than 99¢, and though there were not any for less than 99¢, there were many that were 99¢ less than what we might pay elsewhere so that counts. But some items were, in fact ,99¢.

The Secret Door that Builds Your Muscles

Posted in neato, things i like with tags , , , on November 9, 2009 by absurddelight

Reasons this door is pleasing:

- It looks difficult to make

- It looks difficult to open

-It looks difficult to look at, (OK, to see)

- It has hinges but no doorknob or keyhole

-To open it you must press the right sequence of secret brick buttons… or speak in elvish

-It is in New York City and thousands of people walk by it every day
